Color Correction

HOW TO COLOR CORRECT YOUR SKIN AND IMPORTANCE OF COLOR CORRECTION IN MAKEUP?

WHAT IS COLOR CORRECTING?

Color correcting is for anyone who struggles with uneven skin tone. Color Correction is basically a concept which is used to neutralize/cancels out unwanted color on the skin. Unwanted color can be temporary or permanent.Temporary discoloration can be because of something like active acne (redness), deep dark circles (bluish/ purplish discoloration), or something permanent like a tattoo,  birth-mark etc. If you have an issue of dark circles under your eyes or redness on the face and if you are unable to hide them and in order to make them even tone color correction be comes to your rescue.Color correction is the first step after primer.

CONCEPT OF COLOR CORRECTION-

It is basically a circle of colors, based on 3 primary colors- red, yellow, blue. (see image below )

We need to understand here in terms of color correcting makeup, is that if you add up two colors from opposite sides of the color wheel, they get neutralized. And you need to use this principle to hide skin discoloration/imperfections. Like if youhave redness (saydue to acne)apply a green corrector over it toneutralize redness. If you have dark circles (dark circles are generally bluish, because of the underlying veins) you use an orange corrector over it to neutralize the blue tones. If you have sallow, dull skin (yellowish) use a lavender corrector (which belongs to purple category).

NEED OF COLOR CORRECTION

Sometimes the pigmented areas can be covered with foundation or concealer but after some time the area will turn grey.

APPLICATION -

  1. Apply a tiny amount using your fingertips, the heat from fingers melts the product into the skin to get streak free finish.
  2. Follow application by blending your corrector into the skin with a concealer brush or sponge (this is the most important part of color correcting, blend till the color diffuses into the skin.
  3. If you’re on the oily side, Always top it off with a setting powder.

IS IT COMPULSORY TO USE COLOR CORRECTOR ALWAYS?

It depends on how perfect you want your base to be like light for everyday wear or a high coverage for occasions or night outs/party. If you are to attend a party or for special occasions, I would recommend you to use a corrector based on your skin’s requirements. For bridal make-up, do notmiss out on color correctors.

ORDER OF APPLYING MAKEUP PRODUCTS WHEN USING COLOR CORRECTORS ?

Correctors need to be applied after primer and before the concealer (matching your skin tone). So you first neutralize discoloration, and then apply a concealer matching your skin tone.

WHICH COLOR GOES ON WHAT ?

ORANGE-Orange is used to help cancel out skin problems with a bluish or purplish hue areas under the eyes (Medium to dark skin ).

GREEN- Skin problems like rashes, sunburn and acne can leave your face looking red. Using a green-colored corrector will help you cancel out the redness in these areas.

PURPLE-Using a purple-colored concealer can help brighten up dull or sallow-looking skin.

PEACH-Neutralizes dark spots for Light/Medium skintone.

LIGHT YELLOW-Corrects dullness and brightens skin.

YELLOW-Neutralizes purple/blue undertones.

The Dos & Don’ts of Applying Color Correcting Concealer

  • Always stick to the less is more concept otherwise you won’t be able to hide or you need to apply multiple layers of foundation and concealer to hide the corrector color and it will look patchy and cakey.
  • Do apply thin layers . A thick layer of corrector may show through your foundation.
  • Color correcting concealer is meant to be used only on blemishes that are dark in appearance. For smaller less noticeable blemishes, a regular concealer will do its job.
  • Use a beauty blender to pat the product into the skin. Don’t move the colors all over your face. This will undo all the hard work you’ve done by moving the color pigments onto the wrong areas.
  • Do remember that makeup should enhance your skin not hide it! So think of color correcting concealer as a fun extra step tone that’s to be used sparingly .
  • Do choose the right tones for your skin .The effectiveness of color correctors depends on finding the right tone to match your blemishes. As orange is for dark skin and peach is for light skin .
